Virtual instruments (VIs) are software generally software emulations of real keyboard instruments. They can also be unique instruments unto themselves. They can be accessed through most digital audio workstations (DAWs) and played either with a recorded MIDI track or, more commonly, by a connected MIDI keyboard. They can also exist in "standalone" mode and accessed with a connected MIDI keyboard. The third method of access in with a "wrapper" that creates an environment similar to standalone, but with the ability to open and layer numerous VSTs with effects and mixing. VIs usually come in 3 different platforms: VST, AU and RTAS. VST (Virtual Studio Technology) was developed by Steinberg Audio for use with such DAWs as Logic Audio or Cubase. AU (Audio Unit) is a platform for such DAWs as MOTU's Digital Performer. RTAS (Real Time Audio Suite) was developed by Digidesign specifically ffor their ProTools platform. Companies such as fXpansion have created utlities to convert VSTs to AU or RTAS format. A new technology has emerged from a company called Muse Research. They have developed a 2 rack space module that will act as an access environment for VSTs. This box is called the Receptor. It is currently the standard for playing VIs live by touring performers around the globe. See my Receptor page for more in depth information. The programs have to go through a little manipulation before they can be used on the Receptor, but the list is growing constantly. The best resource on the web for available programs is Plugorama. They break down the availability list by a number of criteria such as price, manufacturer, type of instrument, or even method of installation. Native instruments is possibly the leader in Virtual Instrument development. The company specializes in virtual emulations of some of the most classic keyboard instruments. They have also developed many non-traditional instruments. Some of them are:
Spectrasonics was founded by veteran Roland programmer Eric Pershing. Though only three instruments, the company demands the highest quality of sound in their efficient engines. Wonderful user interface and ease to use right out of the box. The three instruments that they have developed are:
